Herrera emerging as future Mexican star
MONTERREY, Mexico, December 21, 2007.- Xitlali Herrera belongs to
the new breed of Mexican Volleyball players and the slender
teenager is giving signs of a promising future in the sport.
Volleyball comes natural to Herrera as her mother Nilia played the
sport and two uncles –Lucio and Imelda- were members of the
National Team as is currently her brother Edgar.
Xitlali, who participated in the Girl’s World Youth Championship
this year, is emerging as one of the favourites to win the “Rising
Star” award to be presented at the end of the Women’s Olympic
Qualifier to the most outstanding player under 18 years-old.
“I am very happy about being selected to play with the National
Senior Team,” said Herrera after the last match of her side. “I am
trying to learn as much as possible from our experienced players
and the players from other teams, too.”
A freshman in high school, the 15 years-old Herrera started to
play the sport at the tender age of 7 and her hopes and
aspirations are very high.
“For the moment, I want to contribute to my team as much as
possible and I am very grateful of our coach for having the
confidence to start me in the starting team,” she said.
Macario Gonzalez, the Mexican coach, has a high opinion about her
pupil as he says:
“I would like to have ten players like her. She is the consummated
team-player and I can see her in the future as a great universal
player with all her abilities in the different facets of the
game.”
